Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
The first year's campaign of rescue excavations by the York Archaeological Trust included work on a Roman sewer and ?baths within the legionary fortress, and examination of the SW defences and some extra-mural settlement of the fortress. Anglo-Scandinavian York was represented in a 10-metre depth of deposits including stratified, 14C-dated timber buildings and much palaeoecological detail. Land between Skeldergate and the Ouse proved to have been a late medieval reclamation; at Newbiggin part of the medieval suburb was examined; and in Union Terrace was a site successively used by a 12th/early 13th-century building, a Carmelite church, the Hospital of St Mary, and a school.
