Abstract:
During a watching brief in 2009 on construction work for the Weymouth Relief Road in Dorset, by Oxford Archaeology, human remains within a mass grave were discovered. The remains represented about fifty young men who had been brutally killed in the late 10th or early 11th century AD, a time when several Viking attacks are known to have occurred in the Dorset area. This article describes the findings from the excavation and subsequent analysis, and discusses the historical background and possible contexts of the massacre. LD
