Argues that even the labouring peasant would have noticed the collapse in the trading economy at the end of the Roman occupation, which it is suggested was triggered by a 'tax revolt' among the elite. Many of the subsequent transformations in RB life from 5th to 7th centuries are seen as a result of the loss of prestige graded goods. Also considered are reasons for the failure of the English to take over the whole British diocese: the post-RB society was so diverse and unstable - like that of the English - that it could not be taken from the top downwards. | ||
