Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
A small excavation in advance of the sinking of a lift shaft over the site of a previously recorded timber platform produced much artefactual evidence. However, the existence of the platform could not be confirmed and anomalies in the original report may indicate that it never existed in its recorded form. The site is interpreted as being indicative of a fort annexe ditch. Specialist reports include `Botanical samples' (49--50) by J P Huntley, followed by `Samian ware' (50--8) by Brenda Dickinson. The latter details a predominantly southern Gaulish assemblage, with an unusually high proportion of decorated ware, deposited in the early 80s (AD). There are reports on the `Coarse pottery' (58--62) by l Hird and `The vessel glass' (63--8) by H E M Cool. `Wooden artefacts' (68--79) included writing tablets, tent pegs and a possible cage side. The `Leather' (79--98) by S Winterbottom included tent pieces and a drum shaped object. An `Iron ring with intaglio' (98) by M Henig describes one cornelian intaglio portraying a satyr in Bacchanalian mode and this is followed by details of the `Copper-alloy objects' (99--101) by T G Padley. Finally, `Dendrochronology' (101) by C Groves dates examples to 77--78 AD. | ||||||||||||||||
