Sediment studies suggest episodes of soil movement from the hillsides between 3000 BP and 1750 BP. The need for caution in the interpretation of certain mire deposits is highlighted. The environmental and vegetational history of the island is shown to have changed from birch-hazel woodland, becoming increasingly tree-less in the BA but with some trees remaining up to the medieval period. Palynological studies evince Early Dark Age -- Early Medieval pastoral and arable farming. | ||||
