Excavation of an area of a medieval suburb revealed deep medieval midden deposits and a line of postholes which may have been part of the defences of the castle, destroyed in 1209. Yard surfaces; a diverse artefact assemblage including metalwork, leather, wood, pottery and stone; faunal remains; clay-lined pits, probably post-medieval and associated with tanning; at least two stone-lined wells; and a series of wall foundations were also found. A series of burials may relate to a fourteenth-century chapel mentioned in documentary sources. | |||||||||||||||||||||||
