Abstract:		 Details the work of a project set up to assess the levels of deterioration on previously surveyed sites and notes procedures put in place to prevent or reduce further damage. A classification is proposed based on the function of earthworks as dividers of land for political and economic reasons. Two sections of the multi-period groupings and reports are separately authored: `Group 2: Economic land divisions' by E Lawes-Martay (72--7); and `The catrail' by J Milln (79--83). There are a number of appendices in the form of tables which arrange sites variously (147--64).
