Work confirmed the presence of two outer concentric ditches noted on air photographs, and an inner ditch. No dating evidence was found and no stratigraphy connected the outer ditches (which could be prehistoric) with the motte. Only further excavation could show whether the 'motte' is just that, or a pre-Norman tumulus or raised rath. | |||||||
