Abstract:
Excavation revealed four phases of activity. Phase 1 comprised the brick walls of a cellar belonging to the Tudor hall which stood on the site till the 1920s. Phase 2 consisted of seventeenth- to eighteenth-century midden pits and other contemporary features. Phase 3 comprised a mid to late nineteenth century extension to the original building. Phase 4 consisted of layers connected to the destruction and rebuilding of the Hall in the 1920s. An absence of medieval material was noted, which is argued to suggest that the historical belief that the moat surrounding the Hall is medieval might be incorrect.\r\n\r\nIncludes specialist reports on: pottery; medieval glass; bricks; animal bone and shell; and a residual post-medieval buckle.\r\n\r\nAu/PP-B \r\n
