The assemblage presented, from 16-22 Coppergate, York, is of an unprecedented size and variety in England. Over 4,700 iron objects are described dating from c.400 to the late 11th century. Included are knives and tools for crafts such as textile preparation and woodworking, fittings for doors, chests and other iron objects, buckles, strap-ends and pins, and arrow-heads and sword fragments. Smithing tools, iron blanks and scrap provide evidence for iron production. | ||||||||
