Abstract:
Six samples of human bone from four historic excavation sites in Somerset were selected for radiocarbon dating. It was hoped that the material would all be of post-Roman/pre-Anglo-Saxon/early medieval date and that the study would contribute to the Somerset Archaeology and Natural History Society's 'Somerset in the Age of Arthur and Alfred' project. A burial from Coronation Road in Weston-super-Mare dated from the Iron Age, whilst a skeleton from Barton was found to be a late Roman, probably pagan, burial. Three burials from a cemetery at Camerton perhaps represented Christian Romano-Britons of the 7th century. A burial from Ashcombe in Weston-super-Mare also dated from the early medieval period and possibly represented a 'British' or late Romano-British person predating the arrival of Anglo-Saxon influence into the area. The significance of each of the findings is discussed. LD
