Abstract:
Excavations at Thomas Hardye School, on the western outskirts of Dorchester, revealed a complex sequence of Neolithic and Bronze Age monuments and cut features set on the edge of a low plateau. A scatter of pits contained material of Early Neolithic to Later Bronze Age date, including Grooved Ware and Beaker ceramics. A pit-ring also produced Grooved Ware pottery. Several penannular ditches underlay a group of barrows, two of which were linked by a square enclosure. A long sequence of burial was in evidence, beginning with a flat Beaker cemetery (2600--1880 cal BC) which included at least four crouched inhumation burials accompanied by pots and, in three cases, copper alloy knives/daggers. At least ten cremation burials, some accompanied by or contained in Collared Urns (2100--1600 cal BC), were associated with the construction of the linked barrows, and fragmentary remains of a Wessex 2 cremation burial were also recorded, associated with a composite necklace. Several Later Bronze Age burials were inserted into the barrows. A ring-ditch in the northern part of the excavated area was probably part of a Bronze Age linear barrow cemetery previously investigated at Coburg Road. Includes
