Abstract:
Discusses a Palaeolithic Acheulean handaxe identified in the lithic collections of the Museum of Islay Life, mis-labelled as a Neolithic axe. The provenance of the artefact is uncertain, although a person who worked with the late finder believes it to have been found at Traigh nan Cistearchan, Ardnave. Three possibilities for how the handaxe came to be on Islay are suggested, but none is considered satisfactory. However, the issue has demonstrated both the value of examining small museum and private collections for questioning assumptions about the earliest occupation in Scotland, and the difficulties with interpreting artefacts which lack contextual information.
