Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
Virtually all of this number of this journal is taken up with the results of the Board of Celtic Studies's recent survey on this theme, carried out between 1990 and 1992. The report attempts to synthesise the current state of medieval ceramic research for Wales. A quantitative survey was undertaken of the majority of known collections, amounting to over 100,000 sherds. Distributions of continental, English and Welsh regional wares were recorded and dating evidence is summarised for each. For the first time this enables regional differences to be assessed from a level database. This work illustrates that the southern Dyfed ports were major import centres in medieval Wales. Particular emphasis is given to defining local Welsh wares and synthesising the fabric series from different areas. Recommendations are also made for further research. | ||||||||
