Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
Recent fieldwork in the area has broadened the picture of Norse domestic settlement, but it is still far from complete. A selection of settlements are described, including Freswick which has been the site of renewed excavation and whose fish bone remains suggest fishing on a commercial scale (see 93/446 & 93/515). All these sites were revealed by severe coastal erosion, however the distribution of stray finds suggests that more exist inland, perhaps lying under modern farms. Much information has been gained from the investigation of middens, whose quantity and quality of information remains unique in Northern Scotland for this period. | ||||||
