Abstract:
A sewage-filled ditch from Bearsden, a mid-2nd century Roman fort in central Scotland, has been analysed. The identification of cereal bran, pulses, and other food plant fragments from this sewage is discussed and the data compared with those from selected military sites in Scotland, England, Wales, and Germany. It is suggested that the staple plant foods of the Roman military diet were similar in Britain and Germany. The evidence for cereal processing and cooking at the Bearsden fort is considered. Au (adp)
