Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
Discusses the site of a relief carving of the Roman period adjacent to a cave at Edgar's Field near Chester. The figure depicted is generally considered to represent the goddess Minerva. However, the author compares the site with Mithraic temple sites featuring caves or natural rock faces in other parts of England and Europe and discusses evidence for the prevalence of the Mithra cult in Deva (Roman Chester), particularly tombstones. He speculates that the cave site at Edgar's Field may represent a Mithraeum, founded perhaps before 150 AD. LD | ||||
