Abstract: |
The relationship between the Ordnance Survey and archaeology was often unhappy, sometimes stormy, is now to be dissolved on the recommendation of the Serpell Committee (see 80/6586). This booklet traces the history of the relationship from its beginnings under the pioneering General William Roy in late 18th century, through the Irish 6-inch survey of 1824-46, the large scale survey of Great Britain in 1854-94, and the period of O G S Crawford, 1920-45, to 1965. The period maps and the establishment of the National Non-Intensive Record represent the most significant achievements of the Archaeology Division. W F Grimes provides a foreword. |
