Abstract: |
A paper with European reference is Peter Rowley-Conwy & Marek Zvelebil (pp 40-56), 'Saving it for later: storage by prehistoric hunter-gatherers in Europe'. Seasonal, interannual, and long-term fluctuations in resources are distinguished and the responses available to higher-latitude hunter-gatherers are examined. Storage can buffer shortages in the first two kinds. Indirect evidence for storage comes from resource specialization, more permanent settlement, and mass capture technology (eg for fish). These features are found in Europe in the locations predicted by the model. Under certain conditions some groups or individuals can accumulate more resources than others and hence acquire prestige. The skills of planning ahead are in evidence. Au(adp) |
