Abstract: |
The east part of the site was located within Hendon Village 'local area of archaeological importance', as designated in the London borough of Barnet Unitary Development Plan. The area of the site, which comprised a number of buildings forming the campus, was 3.4ha. There were no SAMs or Listed Buildings within the site boundary. The earliest maps obtained for the site dated to the 18th century, and these showed most of the site to have been fields up to the 20th century, the only buildings prior to this time were those related to Churchend Farm and part of Model Farm, both of which lay to the north-east of the site. To the south-east of the site gardens and a lake existed at the site up to the mid 20th century. Hendon Technical Institute was built in 1937 by Middlesex County Council and was built over Churchend Farm, part of Model Farm, and the gardens and lake. Since its original construction the site had expanded to the extent that little open space that was once fields existed other than the playing field to the west of the site. Little was known about the infrastructure of the buildings at Hendon Campus, but they would have had an impact on any surviving archaeological deposits, the extent of which could only be assessed by further investigation. It was therefore recommended that further information was necessary in order to determine the full impact on the site and any potential archaeological deposits. Furthermore, AOC would deem extensive geotechnical investigations with archaeological monitoring as a useful means of determining the presence or absence of any archaeological deposits. [Au(abr)] |
