Abstract: |
Consultation of documentary and map-based archives indicated that the area lay in an area of archaeological importance. This was reflected in the designation of a section of the site, to the rear of the existing cinema building, within a notification area of Scheduled Ancient Monument Glos. 361. The study area spanned insulae I and XIV/XV of the Roman town, separated by an inter-insulae street. A section of the Roman forum lay beneath the western half of the proposed development area. The remainder of the site overlay the Roman street and its adjoining eastern frontage. The study area lay to the south-east of the historic core of the Anglo-Saxon, medieval and later town, and there was no recorded post-Roman development until the 19th century. [Au(abr)] |
