Abstract:
An archaeological desk-based assessment was undertaken of the new secondary water treatment works. The report concluded that there was significant evidence for past activity within the study area, the archaeological remains of which could be adversely affected by the proposed works. This activity related to the medieval and post-medieval occupation of Ellingham and cultivation of the surrounding area. In view of the existence of well-preserved earthworks representing both medieval agriculture and post-medieval settlement, an appropriate mitigation strategy was proposed. As the three different options would affect different archaeological contexts, different mitigation strategies were considered. Groundworks on the site of Option 1 would adversely affect the surviving ridge and furrow field system. As this archaeological feature had already been affected by tree planting in this area, a watching brief on groundwork would be a sufficient mitigation strategy. To properly assess the complexity, preservation and informative potential of the archaeological features at the site of Option 2, further evaluation of the study area would be necessary. A series of archaeological evaluation trenches would allow a more definite assessment of the complexity and extent of archaeological features and deposits within the area to be affected by the proposed works. The archaeological context of the site of Option 3 was less clear. It was likely that the remains of medieval agriculture would be affected by groundworks, and it was possible that satellite burials and features associated with the churchyard could be encountered. For this reason, an archaeological watching brief should be seen as a minimum mitigation strategy. [Au(adp)]
