Abstract: |
The evaluation was undertaken within an area of land that lay within the immediate area of a linear cemetery of three extant Bronze Age barrows and eleven ring ditches, one of which was located on part of the site. The trenching established that housing formerly occupying the site had caused considerable disturbance across a considerable area, although the truncation was not sufficient to have removed traces of a narrow, linear ditch which - on excavation - was found to contain a small quantity of undiagnostic worked flint. Although only a short length was uncovered, sufficient was seen to be able to determine with a good degree of confidence that it was linear and not curving in plan; it was therefore reasonable to discount the possibility that it was the remains of a previously undetected ring ditch. Its date and function remained uncertain. No other archaeological features or pre-modern finds were encountered. [Au] |
