Abstract:
The evaluation was undertaken in advance of proposed residential development. The old main road through Rockingham could have once passed directly through the site. Excavation revealed little evidence of medieval tenements, possibly as a result of 18th and 19th century disturbance. The remains of an undated wall foundation running perpendicular to the road were found beneath a late post-medieval cobbled yard. A topographical survey was undertaken of the surviving remnant of medieval ridge and furrow prior to fieldwork. A possible boundary ditch was located immediately to the west of the medieval field; this produced pottery from the 12th to 14th centuries. Exploration in the pastured area recovered several sherds of 12th to 14th century medieval pottery. 19th century activity had considerably affected the survival of archaeological evidence on the western part of the site.
