Abstract:
An archaeological evaluation was undertaken in response to a condition upon planning permission for the redevelopment of the site. The site lay in an area of the medieval town. Historic documents suggested that the market square was laid out after 1100 on a site adjoining the priory precinct, though there had been little archaeological work carried out on the southern side of the square. Surviving 15th century buildings to the east suggested that tenements had begun to occupy the square by the late medieval period. During the 18th century, the site formed the premises of a tavern known as the Bear Inn (documented from at least 1670). The evaluation revealed the presence of former riverside structures along the rear of the tenement plot stretching back from the market place. Principal amongst these was a set of steps bonded to a retaining wall and probably associated with a free-standing jetty associated with the Hen Brook to the south. In addition a large well was located in the narrow part of the alleyway running alongside No. 30. Both features were likely of 18th/19th century date. Elsewhere, levelling/ground consolidation deposits and 'garden soils' of post-medieval and modern date overlay the terrace gravel across the northern part of the site. Alluvial deposits were recorded at the southern end of the plot, closer to the course of the Hen Brook. The ground surface had clearly been raised substantially across the site. [Au(abr)]
