Abstract: |
Building works for the construction of a terraced house unearthed what was thought by the builder to be an intact human burial. This was confirmed by a visit by York Archaeological Trust the same day; a watching brief was carried out on the digging of foundations the following day. Parts of four west-east aligned skeletons were revealed in the foundation trenches, and although darker soil indicative of grave fill was seen, no evidence of grave cuts or coffins was found. The burials were thought to be part of the medieval cemetery of St. Edward's Church, further burials (supporting this idea) had been found nearby. The occurrence of a modern deposit directly over the graveyard soil indicated that any post-graveyard deposits had been removed during clearance prior to the construction of the extant 19th century houses. The skeletons, and a small quantity of disarticulated bone, were reburied. [Au(adp)] |
