Abstract: |
An archaeological watching brief identified small parts of building foundations, brick culverts and pipe ducts. Waste sand from the foundries had been disposed of in small pits across the site. Three fragments of medieval pottery were recovered, all from within 20th century material and were redeposit. During the redevelopment, contractors discovered human remains beneath the floor of the northern end of Block 8. The remains consisted of long bones, ribs and skull fragments from several individuals ranging in age from 2 to 35 years old. None of the bones were complete and none showed any obvious sign of breakages or disease. A fragment of frontal bone from a juvenile skull amongst the bones has had the upper cranial vault removed post-mortem in order to remove the brain. All were thought to predate the construction of Marshalls offices in 1882 and probably originated from the burial ground of a church that used to stand directly opposite the site. [Au(abr)] |
