Abstract: |
An archaeological evaluation was undertaken in advance of the proposed residential redevelopment of the site. The site lay within the area of the Saxon settlement of Coslany, to the north of the main Saxon town of Norwich. Five evaluation trenches were located across the area of proposed development. An old channel of the River Wensum was revealed within Trenches 2, 4 and 5, overlain by 18th/19th century demolition layers. Within Trenches 1 and 3, closer to the street frontage, industrial activity (tanning) dating to the 13th-14th centuries was found interleaved with a sequence of reclamation/refuse dumps. The area encompassed by Trench 1 and 3 was abandoned from the 15th-17th centuries with cellared buildings appearing towards the end of the 18th century and beyond. [Au(abr)] |
