Abstract: |
An archaeological desk-based assessment was undertaken in advance of the proposed redevelopment of the market and the erection of residential dwellings. No archaeology was known from the site. The medieval village of Peckham lay along the modern High Street, though possibly with further occupation along the early course of Rye Lane. The village almost certainly had Saxon origins. Sparse prehistoric and Roman finds showed little of the character of the area during these periods. Much archaeological work in recent years, along the High Street, had revealed prehistoric to post-medieval finds. Excluding the latter category, finds were mostly from a residential context, although some Saxo-Norman pit features had survived to the north of the High Street and sparse later medieval evidence had survived. Cartographic sources suggest that the area was rural until the developments of the 19th and 20th centuries. The area was heavily bomb-damaged in World War II. [Au(adp)] |
