Abstract:
An Environmental Impact Assessment was undertaken in order to assess the cultural heritage implications of the proposed development at the Silverstone Circuit. No SAMs or Listed Buildings would be affected by the development proposals. The proposed development would have an impact upon a Grade I Registered Park in addition to three known archaeological sites and one non-Listed structure of historical interest. These were: the northern edge of Stowe Park, a Grade I Listed Park; Numerous cropmarks around Luffield Abbey Farm, which may have represented medieval boundary features. A number of the cropmarks were probably WWII features of local importance; The site of two, possibly three, large ponds which may have been medieval; Geophysical anomalies of uncertain origin; The line of an extant WWII runway. It was possible that construction activities associated with the proposed revised track configuration would have an impact on one further archaeological site. This was the site of a round barrow which was of regional, possibly national, importance. The site would have been thickly forested throughout the prehistoric, Roman and early medieval periods, and the general archaeological potential for these periods was likely to have been low. During the medieval period the proposed development area would have been located within the environs of Luffield Priory and therefore had the potential to contain features, such as outbuildings, associated with the priory. The main priory buildings were believed to lie on the site of Luffield Abbey Farm. [Au(adp)]
