Abstract: |
An archaeological desk-based assessment was carried out to assess the archaeological resource of the site and in particular to establish the significance of the built structures standing within the site. The was no evidence for archaeological deposits predating the post-medieval period in the vicinity of the site. However, there were two areas of gravel terrace present which are common locations for prehistoric activity. A group of buildings were present at the western side of the site depicted on cartographic sources of the 18th to 20th century. Several buildings of the original phase of the Midland Railway Carriage and Wagon works, constructed between 1909 and 1912 were present on the site. These buildings were not included in Richard Moriss' gazetteer of important railway works. The proposed development would have resulted in the demolition of most buildings present on the site. Suggested mitigation comprised an independent assessment of the buildings by an expert and monitoring of any further groundwork. [Au(adp)] |
