Abstract: |
The assessment identified that the proposed development site lay within an area of high general archaeological potential. Early documentary and map evidence showed that the site lay just within the late Saxon and medieval town. In addition it was immediately adjacent to the late Saxon town ditch and there was a good possibility that the part of the development area at the North Street frontage overlay the location of the bank that would have accompanied the ditch. Early map evidence showed that the site had been occupied by buildings since the early 17th century, and perhaps for an unknown period before. Previous development may have reduced this potential to an uncertain, though probably significant degree, over most, but perhaps not all of the area. [Au(adp)] |
