Abstract:
Desk-based assessment of the proposed site of a housing development identified that a Palaeolithic handaxe and other flint implements of Mesolithic, Neolithic and Bronze Age date had been recorded within a 500m radius of the site. The Mesolithic material was the most prolific. Development proposals included the conversion of a former hop kiln at the site into a new residence. It was concluded that the site had a moderate to high archaeological potential, but it was noted that the development was to take place within areas where disturbance had previously occurred, so that any archaeological levels were likely to have been destroyed. It was recommended that a watching brief should be carried out during ground disturbance, but that this need not involve professional archaeologists, as a local volunteer group would be prepared to undertake the work. It was also noted that the Surrey Industrial History Group was interested in recording details of the hop kiln prior to and/or during conversion. [AIP]
