Abstract: |
Consultation of documentary and map-based archives indicated that the site lay in an area of archaeological importance. This was reflected in the designation of the site within a notification area of SAM Glocs. 361. The study area lay within an area which potentially contained remains associated with the vicus associated with the 1st century AD Roman fort. Sealing those deposits were likely to be remains associated with the Roman town of Corinium. Specifically, the study area lay along the southwestern frontage of INSULA XXII, and included part of the inter-insulae street separating INSULAE XXII and XXI. Medieval and post-medieval deposits within the backlands of the tenements fronting Cricklade Street may also have potentially survived. [Au(abr)] |
