Abstract: |
Desk-based assessment of the proposed site of a retail and office development revealed that no archaeological remains had been recorded within the site itself, but that a number of Saxon burials had been recorded to the east, and Roman Stane Street passed nearby. Other remains recorded in the vicinity included a dene hole of possible Romano-British date, late Roman or Saxon burials, the foundations of a 17th century building, and a site where prehistoric flints, medieval pottery and minor post-medieval features had been observed. 18th century maps showed buildings on or near the development site, and documentary sources provided information on their character. However, any near-surface remains relating to these were likely to have been damaged by later disturbance, so that only deeper features such as pits or wells were likely to survive to any degree. A specification for a watching brief during development works was provided. [AIP] |
