Abstract: |
Desk-based assesment of the proposed site of an office building identified that an Iron Age ditch may have been found within the site during a previous investigation, but that the location of this feature was uncertain. Other remains recorded in the vicinity incuded major Neolithic and Late Bronze Age sites, a possible Romano-British farmstead, an enclosure ditch containing 12th century pottery and bone, and the Egham Causeway, a road and flood defence constructed in the 13th century. Medieval building remains had also been found in association with a possible moat, and evidence of late Saxon occupation had been found. Cartographic evidence indicated that the proposal site had lain within arable fields until the 1960s. It was concluded that the site had a very high archaeological potential, although parts had been damaged by previous development. It was recommended that trial trenching should be carried out.
