Abstract: |
A survey of the pasture immediately east of Burgh Lane detected a buried ferrous pipeline and a number of linear anomalies possibly provided evidence for ditches, field boundaries or enclosures that possibly warrant further investigation. A geophysical survey of the school fields had indicated that most of this area was underlain by a dense network of tile land drains arranged in a herringbone fashion. The thermoremnant magnetisation of these structures prevented the detection of more subtle anomalies of possible archaeological interest beneath this part of the site. Several short linear magnetic anomalies detected elsewhere on the site possibly represented further discrete land drains of soil-filled ditches. Geophysical survey was also carried out on land west of Burgh Lane along the route of the proposed road. Owing to the density of the woodland vegetation, it was possible to examine only a 20m by 20m sample area. No geophysical anomalies of archaeological interest were detected in this area. [Au(adp)] |
