Abstract:
An archaeological desk-based assessment undertaken was prior to planning consent. The western side of the site consisted of buildings formerly used for the allied trade of a fellmonger. The manorial evidence was such that it would have been difficult to trace the owners of the site to before c.1830 and it may have been used as a fellmongers only during the 19th and early 20th century. The series of pits associated with a tannery were absent from the maps. The eastern side of the site was an early 19th century maltings and later a stream mill. Again the nature of the documentary evidence made it difficult to argue that a mill had existed on this site from the late medieval period, but was suggested by the name of the bridge, first recorded in 1589, and the discovery of mill timbers in 1833. The site of the rectory and its gardens could have been associated with a late Saxon manor of a pre-conquest date and as such this boundary was of significance in the understanding of the development of the Framlingham in the early medieval period.
