Abstract: |
The assessment site was located within the Roman Legionary Fortress established in AD71 and close to the centre of the medieval city. The report provided evidence for archaeological deposits and structures from the Roman period onwards being preserved over the majority of the site except where they were excavated in an archaeological manner in 1975-76. Cellars may have removed the later deposits towards the street fronts although Roman structures and deposits probably survived below any cellars and away from these preservation should be good. Where structures and deposits had survived close to the street fronts they were likely to have been of high quality and great archaeological significance. [Au(abr)] |
