Abstract:
Following an application to English Heritage for a grant under Section 24 of the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Areas Act 1979 towards the repair, consolidation and conservation works to the south and west curtain walls of Bristol Castle, a watching brief was requested. Work on the south curtain wall included the removal of the upper courses of the walls in front of the curtain wall revealing several more courses of the curtain wall splayed outwards; the removal of fill from a cellar at the east end of the curtain wall revealing the depth of the cellar from the face of the curtain wall was about one metre, the rear wall having been fashioned from reused curtain wall material in the 18th century; infilling of breaches in the curtain wall during which it was noted that the core rubble within the curtain walll was pennant rubble; and the excavation of drainage trench which revealed a deposit of black ashy material containing artefactual evidence of 18th century date. Works to the west curtain wall included the lowering of the ground level on the west side of the curtain wall revealing a small stone relieving arch in the face of the wall possibly associated with a blocked drain in the wall at a lower level; and the removal of brick walling from against the northwest corner of the curtain wall which failed to reveal anything of archaeological interest.
