Abstract: |
A desk-based assessment was undertaken of the site to support a planning application for the construction of a hotel on the former site of Westminster Hospital. A documentary search indicated the significant archaeological potential of prehistoric and post-medieval deposits. The present basement slab of the Hospital Building was likely to have disturbed levels to a depth of at least -2.2m OD. The evidence from boreholes carried out at adjacent sites combined with geotechnical observations made at the time of the construction of the Hospital suggested that all archaeological remains on the site would have been truncated, including all or almost all alluvial deposits. Consequently, recommendations for archaeological mitigation of the development were not thought to be necessary. [Au(adp)] |
