Abstract: |
<summary>The assessment was produced at the request of English Heritage, the aim being to summarise existing information and prepare recommendations on aspects of future research, management and presentation of this nationally important monument. The settlement's origins go back to the Roman period and the remains of the defensive rampart are still visible to the west and north-east. The village of Leintwardine has been the subject of archaeological investigation and observation since the late 19th century, although the majority of the excavations have been carried out since 1950. The significance of the deposits recorded within the village led to large parts of it being designated as a Scheduled Ancient Monument (Hereford & Worcester County Monument No 28: the Roman Station of {italon}Bravinium{italoff}). Current expansion in building development and general planning trends to encourage infill development have placed increasing pressure on this archaeologically sensitive area; almost the entire Scheduled area is included within the residential infill area. The assessment covered both the Scheduled and non-Scheduled parts of the Roman settlement. {italon}Au(adp){italoff} {italon}SMR Primary Record Numbers:{italoff} HWCM549 |
