Abstract:
The excavations revealed the castle walls to be in a good condition and well made down to foundation level. The phasing of the west curtain wall was confirmed down to foundation level, all of which was constructed in a trench cut into the underlying compact silt. No clearly datable medieval deposits were encountered and surprisingly no good organic moat deposits. Indeed the moat appeared to have been thoroughly cleaned out in the early post-medieval period, perhaps at a time of renovation but not long before a period of major 'collapse' or demolition in the late 17th or early 18th century. This collapse left whole parts of a chimney in the moat along with roof tile and window glass. The pre late 17th century water level appeared from staining on the curtain wall to have stood little more than a metre above foundation level and a metre lower than expected from other evidence of medieval date. Since the late 17th to early 18th century collapse nearly 1m of further deposits had accumulated, mostly clays and silts mixed with building demolition culminating in the later chalk stable floors beneath which ran a ceramic land drain the length of the curtain wall.
