Abstract:
The excavation was undertaken prior to the erection of a new block of 12 apartments with associated car parking. A single irregular area of 280-sqm corresponding to the footprint of the main building was stripped. Some 105 archaeological features, comprising 203 deposits, were recorded in the excavations including those from the evaluation trenches. These consisted mainly of medieval pits, numerous construction or foundation cuts for buildings and garden features (both mainly modern) and a variety of types of layer (including floors, levelling dumps and buried soils), mainly stratified in medieval positions. Less common features encountered included isolated post holes, a possible ditch and a hearth. There was a considerable depth to the stratigraphic sequence of the archaeological deposits on the site and, even though the upper levels had suffered from extensive early modern and modern building works, the preservation of lower levels was good and legibility of all features was comparatively high.
