Abstract: |
Desk-based assessment of a proposed development site within the Roman and medieval town of Staines identified that a great deal of archaeological evidence had been recorded in the surrounding area. Features included a Neolithic pit with associated pottery, Roman ditches, and a medieval ditch and pits. The probable line of a Roman road also passed nearby. Recent excavations to the west of the site had revealed a Palaeolithic site of national importance, and a Bronze Age site. Cartographic evience indicated that the site itself may have been subject to development from a relatively early date. Modern development may have damaged or destroyed any archaeological remains which may have been present, but the extent of such damage was uncertain. It was recommended that trial trenching should be carried out prior to the commencement of development. [AIP] |
