Abstract:
24 trial trenches were excavated as an evaluation in advance of the construction of three new structures and car parking, the excavation of three new lakes and extensive landscaping. Archaeological features were encountered in seven of the trenches, but no firm dating evidence was recovered from these contexts, making any conclusions as to their period of history rather vague. It appeared, based on the large amount of calcinated flint and burnt clay fragments in features 101 (pit), 111 (pit) and 112 (pit) in the north west of the trial field and in context 106 to the east, that they were probably of prehistoric date. Similar features to 111 and 112 had been discovered in relation with Bronze Age settlement at a site in Surrey, and this may have been the case here. Similarly, context 106 (gully terminal or pit), and possibly contexts 107 (ditch) and 108 (possible pit) may have represented prehistoric settlement in the north-east of the trial field area, near to trenches 17-20, but with no excavation possible of 107 and 108, the evidence for this relied on feature 106. The other features excavated all seemed to represent field boundaries, in the form of ditches in contexts 103, 104, 105, 109 and 110 with its associated bank. These features contained no artefacts in their fills and as such were hard to date. The sterile nature and appearance of their fills and the presence of 110 on the tithe map of 1840, seemed to suggest a possible post-medieval date for these features though this was very uncertain.
