Abstract:
An archaeological evaluation was undertaken as part of a planning condition prior to development. The desk-based element of the project found that the site lay at the periphery of the medieval settlement, but within an area characterised by occupation since at least the 17th century. Archaeological excavations and discoveries around Soham revealed dispersed activity within a typical fen-edge context. Later historical and archaeological evidence also suggested that Soham was the site of an important 7th century monastery and later settlement. The buildings near the assessment site did not predate the 19th century, though earlier cartographic sources suggested that the vicinity had long been a small focus of settlement. The evaluation, which consisted of two trial trenches, revealed 17th-19th century ditches and pits, a brick-lined cellar and drain. The ceramic evidence suggested intensive use of the site in the 17th-18th century. Some residual late medieval material was present. [Au]
