Abstract: |
The watching brief was conducted during groundworks for the residential development of the former Raynhams Garage site. The site was used as a brewery from at least the mid 18th century. Excavations revealed 2.25 metres of made ground above natural chalk, which appeared to have been deliberate levelling prior to the construction of the existing maltings building on the site. Brick and flint foundation walls, cut through the levelling layers, were interpreted as footings for the recently demolished 19th century extension to the malting building. [Au] |
