Abstract: |
The assessment identified that no prehistoric sites had been found within the study corridor, and that Roman activity was evidenced only by the purported routes of two roads, a single findspot, and possibly by "Celtic" field systems. The site of a medieval manor house may have lain beneath an existing post-medieval hall. The region had developed rapidly in the post-medieval period, although much of the land in the vicinity of the pipeline had remained as pasture. The proposed route crossed a number of sites, including areas of ridge and furrow, a cropmark, a scatter of possible animal shelters, a parish boundary, a former quarry, and fields with recorded names which indicated a possible archaeological interest.
