Abstract: |
Following a desk-based assessment, an archaeological evaluation was carried out. The desk-based assessment identified the approximate locations of several former buildings, mostly situated in the area towards the street frontage, with another building of 20th century date situated close to the eastern limit of the site. A topographic survey identified that generally, the ground sloped down towards Bury End, but undulating terrain occurred near the scheduled earthworks immediately east of the fenced boundary within Great Bury field. Several discrete topographic features were identified within the Study Area comprising, a terrace at the eastern boundary, a depression running parallel to the northern boundary and a depression within the central area of the garden. Upon investigation, all these features proved to be modern. Five trenches were excavated, but other than a small quantity of 14th-15th century pottery, only modern activity was represented.
